Although René Chrétien also paints landscapes, portraits, and a few genre scenes, he is best known as one of France's leading still-life artists.

His work is characterized by meticulous observation of objects, a rich use of materials, and warm lighting that enhances the materials themselves: copper, earthenware, glass, fruit, game, and cheese.
He favors harmonies of browns, ochres, and golds, lending his compositions a warm and authentic atmosphere.
