René CHRETIEN (1867-1942)

was a French painter specializing mainly in still lifes He was a pupil of the greatest masters (Léon Bonnat, Gustave Boulanger and Elie Delaunay).

He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français at the age of just 20, where he received an honorable mention two years later.

His talent earned him numerous awards, including a third medal in 1894, a second medal in 1895 and a silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He exhibited in Brussels in 1910 and was again included in the Salon des Artistes Français in 1940.

René Chrétien likes to paint his still lifes on very elaborate backgrounds, usually in shades of brown.
Very observant of nature, his paintings are very realistic with a beautiful and lively touch.

It's a touching country scene that we're looking at. The peace and quiet of small French villages at the turn of the century touches us.
