Bastien learns to master light during his trips to Morocco and Algeria. His practice of plein air and his taste for "sketching" were also developed in the trenches.
On his return from the war, he turned to painting, especially landscape painting, but also to teaching. From 1927 to 1945 he was a "professor of plein air" at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts.
For Bastien, it is not the drawing that makes the work, but the colour and the light.
