After the war, Alfred Bastien was appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he taught for many years. His teaching emphasized direct observation, compositional structure, and the handling of pictorial materials.
Among the many subjects he likes to tackle are still lifes: simple objects, earthenware, bottles, linens, treated with sensitivity, where composition and material take precedence.
