After the war, Alfred Bastien was appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he taught for many years. His teaching emphasized direct observation, compositional structure, and the handling of pictorial materials.

Bastien’s palette combines warm tones—ochres, browns, yellows—for the buildings and ground with a luminous light blue sky, creating a contrast that highlights the village’s bustling activity.
The diffused afternoon light is rendered with great subtlety, lending the scene an atmosphere that is both peaceful and lively. The brushwork is vigorous and textured: impasto highlights the relief of the horses and the wagon, while rapid brushstrokes evoke the movement and energy of rural life
