In the 1850s, Vallou de Villeneuve turned to photography, becoming one of the first French artistic photographers. He opened a studio in Paris and primarily produced nude studies for painters, as well as portraits of famous actors and actresses from the Comédie-Française.

Julien Vallou de Villeneuve leaves behind a rich and varied legacy that blends graphic arts and photography, and his works are now housed in institutions such as the Musée d’Orsay and the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

Here, the painter depicts a young nude woman, lightly draped in a white sheet, leaning against a tree
. Her body is rendered with great softness and delicacy, typical of the 19th-century academic style.
Her posture is both graceful and intimate, with her gaze lowered and her body slightly turned, creating a sense of reserve and delicacy.

The setting is a forest landscape, featuring finely rendered rocks, foliage, and undergrowth, creating a contrast between the wildness of nature and the softness of the female form.
The background features dark, earthy tones, which highlight the figure’s fair skin, making her the focal point of the painting.
