The artist's talents range from classic floral compositions to more complex symbolic works and pastels.
In pastel, she likes to work with light effects and sensitive facial expressions, sometimes imbued with mystery or melancholy.
This work illustrates Berthe Burgkan's interest in intimate portraiture and the representation of childhood, a popular theme in the second half of the 19th century.
The artist not only faithfully renders the child's physical features, but also captures the child's sensitivity, accurately conveying the innocence of childhood and the vivacity of her character. The doll, discreetly integrated into the composition, reinforces the atmosphere of tenderness.
The reviews of the time read: "There's a very daring, very personal note of truth in these children's heads, reddened under their blond hair: a constant search for the real thing".
