Berthe BURGKAN (1855-1936)
A pupil at the Académie Julian, she studied with the greatest painters of her time, including Gustave Boulanger, Benjamin Constant and Tony Robert Fleury.
She began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1878. In 1891, we find traces of a pastel entitled Enfant à la poupée (Child with a doll), which could be the one we are presenting.

The artist's talents range from classic floral compositions to more complex symbolic works and pastels.
The reviews of the time read: "There's a very daring, very personal note of truth in these children's heads, reddened under their blond hair: a constant search for the real thing".
Our pastel was exhibited at the Musée de Vernon as part of the "La Ronde des bambins" exhibition, June 3-August 27, 2023.
