Alice Dannenberg, unknown to the general public today, is nevertheless an extraordinary painter and woman.
From 1909 onwards, together with Martha Stettler, she directed La Grande Chaumière, a free academy founded in 1904, which was the historical and cosmopolitan centre of French artistic life at the beginning of the 20th century.
She likes to paint children, in Parisian gardens or elsewhere. They will delight critics and amateurs alike.
A critic wrote the following in 1908
"Here at last are kids who are real kids, in the joy of laughter or the grimace of tears, who are alive and who have nothing in common with the pastelised children we see.
With a palette of joyful colours and a lively brushstroke, she offers us expressive canvases.
