He studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris in the studios of Léon Bonnat and Daubigny.
His first works were landscapes.
From 1875 onwards, he developed a style of his own, somewhere between Romanticism, Renaissance Italy and the naturalism of Gustave Courbet, whom he admired.
In 1877, he won a gold medal at the Salon and began a career focused on portraiture, becoming one of the official painters of the Third Republic with his painting "La Grève de Mineurs" in 1880.

The model's half-reclining position, her lascivious pose, the black sheet falling from her knees, the subtle interplay of the three colors and the tight shot make this one of the painter's most atypical and modern paintings.
