Léon Glaize 1842-1931

He came from a family of artists, his father being none other than Auguste Barthélemy Glaize (1807-1893), one of the great masters of his generation.

He studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris in Jean Léon Gérôme's studio.
When he was just 17, he took part in the Salon for the first time, receiving an honorable mention.

He was present at all the major salons, painting mythological and public subjects, followed by portraits, which he specialized in. His masters included Jean Léon Gérôme and Victor Hugo.

In 1866 he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome.

Glaize received numerous commissions for public and religious buildings:
the ceiling of the Théâtre des Arts in Rouen (destroyed during the Second World War), the marriage hall in the town hall of the twentieth arrondissement, and the friezes in the Salon des Arts at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. He also created the decorations for the Saint-Louis d'Antin church and the Saint François-Xavier chapel in the Saint-Merri church.

On several occasions, Léon Glaize was a member of the jury for the annual Salons, and a member of the jury for the Prix de Rome. He was made a knight (1877) and then an officer of the Légion d'honneur (1906).

Our work is a classic academic painting of great finesse and lightness.
