He left for Rome, Venice and the major cities of Italy. Then, without a protector and a Calvinist, he returned to Paris around 1637 and finally achieved great success.
In 1643, the goldsmiths' guild commissioned a votive painting from him, to be presented to the chapter of Notre-Dame.

Le Martyre de Saint-Pierre is one of his most famous works. When the Académie Royale de peinture et de sculpture was founded, he was one of the twelve elders who made up the company.

In 1652 he was appointed first painter by Christine of Sweden.

Our Holy Family is not by his hand, but by a follower.

Observe the freshness of the colors, the delicacy and grace of the Virgin's movements as she reveals her sleeping son to the viewer, and the devotion of her face.
The composition also features Saint Joseph in the background, gazing at a young girl who has surely come to admire the newborn child.
In the foreground, St. John the Baptist, accompanied by his lamb, represents Christ's future martyr. He holds out a cross to the mother, whose eyes are fixed on the newborn.
