Armand Berton (1854-1917)

Deaf, Armand Berton was first a student at the Arts-Décoratifs and then at the Beaux-Arts in 1872, where he studied under the famous academician Alexandre Cabanel, who passed on to him his passion for female figures.

He continued his career, exhibiting at the Salon between 1875 and 1907. He became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he exhibited between 1892 and 1910. He was awarded the bronze medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition, then the gold medal of French artists at the 1900 Universal Exhibition, at the same time as receiving the Légion d'Honneur.

Throughout his career, he was a constant visitor to the Louvre, where he admired the great masters, such as Rembrandt, for whom he had a passion. In this way, these artists would influence the artist's future work in different ways.

A complete artist, he not only painted, but also produced etchings, pastels and illustrations.
Very close to Eugène Carrière, the great portraitist, this quotation from a critic addressed to Carrière's work fits Berton's work perfectly, and particularly our painting:
"It seems rather as if, after having solidly constructed and masterfully modeled his figures, he erases and blurs to remove from his drawing anything that would be unnecessarily assertive or brutal."

Our work perfectly illustrates the painter's aesthetic, with its intimate treatment and soft, restrained color palette.
The young girl's blond hair is adorned with a pale pink bow. This enchanted vision fills the viewer with tenderness, and the tight framing reinforces her closeness.
