Ferdinand Gueldry entered the Beaux-Arts in Paris at the age of 16 as a student of Jean-Léon Gerôme.

Gueldry painted many pictures of the banks of the Marne and especially of canoeists. The works of this period are luminous, very influenced by the research of the impressionists.

He is also interested in the lives of workers in factories and their daily lives.
Our work depicts these families on the fringes of the progress of the industrial revolution at the Benevolent Office (a state agency that helps the needy).
These scenes are staggeringly realistic and bear witness to the working class life of the time.
