This painting follows the delicate and intimate tradition of 18th-century child portraits, a genre particularly appreciated in aristocratic and enlightened bourgeois circles.

On the back, signature Capiano Valenti, made in 1778.

The child is depicted in a bust portrait, slightly in three-quarter view, in a natural and calm pose, far removed from the solemnity of official portraits of adults. His gentle, direct gaze establishes an immediate connection with the viewer, characteristic of these portraits intended to celebrate innocence and grace rather than rank or authority.

The face is rendered with subtle modeling, with rosy, luminous skin tones, recalling the attention paid to the sensitivity and psychology of childhood in the Age of Enlightenment.

The attribute held in his hands—a bunch of grapes—has strong symbolic value. In 18th-century iconography, grapes represent abundance and fertility, but also childhood and the sweetness of life.
