Paul Leduc 1876-1943

Born 1876 in La Louvière, Belgium, the son of Hubert Leduc, himself a painter, and Marie Pourbaix.
Attracted to painting from an early age, he began his artistic training in Tervuren, alongside the pupils of Joseph Coosemans. He then pursued formal studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Mons under Antoine Bourlard (1891-1896), then at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp (NHISKA), where he was a pupil of Albert Baertsoen.

At first, Leduc devoted himself to the landscapes of his region: the canals and rivers of Frandres, the light and soft winter atmosphere of Brabant...

Gradually, Leduc became more and more captivated by light.
He moved to the south of France, in particular Martigues and Marseille, explored Provence and the Veneto region, then spent time in Italy and Algeria.

There, he sought a brighter clarity, stronger colors and luminous atmospheres that contrasted with those in Belgium.

His style evolved from an Impressionist base, influenced by French Impressionism, to what is now known as luminism.
This term describes his way of capturing light with intensity, not only in the sky or reflections, but also in the very matter of the landscape (water surfaces, roofs, trees, atmospheric effects).
His paste is abundant, rich and "greasy", and his brushstrokes often reveal a sense of texture.
