Belonging to what was then known as the "Jeune peinture" movement, the artist joined the Société des Artistes indépendants and exhibited for several years at the resulting Salon des Indépendants in Paris.
Moulin de la Galette was first mentioned in 1622 as Moulin du Palais.
Owned by the Debray family since 1809, it produces flour. Transformed into a guinguette in 1870, it doubles as the neighboring Moulin Radet.
The Debrays therefore decided to keep just one mill: the choice fell on the butte-à-fin, which was renamed Moulin de la Galette around 1895.
Much frequented by painters, it had its moment of glory when Renoir painted it in "Le Bal du Moulin de la Galette", and also inspired Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso.
Along with Moulin Radet, this is the last remaining mill of the thirty that once graced the Butte Montmartre.
