André HARDY 1887–1986

He is a French painter with deep ties to Normandy, particularly to the Bocage region and the Swiss Normandy area, which have inspired most of his work.

Painter of typical scenes, landscapes, animated landscapes, watercolorist, illustrator, poster artist. Postimpressionist

Born into a modest family—his parents ran a café-restaurant in Flers, in the Manche department (
)— he began his careeras a schoolteacher at a very young age after entering teacher’s college at 15. While teaching, Hardy took classes in painting and printmaking at the Beaux-Arts, notably with Raoul Douin, and developed a passion for the visual arts.

His professional career led him to teach in various towns (Trouville, Clécy, Caen), and he eventually passed the City of Paris art teacher certification exam with flying colors. When World War I broke out, he was in Paris, where he was enlisted as an auxiliary, but the harsh conditions in the capital made him long to return to the landscapes of Normandy

After the war, Hardy divided his time between teaching and his artistic practice: he returned to Normandy, taught drawing in Condé-sur-Noireau, and then taught industrial design and mathematics in Douvres-la-Délivrande until 1944.

Hardy is a prolific artist: he creates oil paintings, drawings, gouaches, engravings, and a few sculptures

His works sensitively evoke meadows, apple trees in bloom, traditional buildings, the banks of the Orne River, and rural interiors in Normandy, revealing a style of painting marked by a genuine love for the region.
But also the sea and the lives of fishermen

Here, on a bustling pier, four fishermen and a woman are absorbed in their work, bathed in the warm light of a unfurled sail.
The vivid colors of the sea and the sail contrast with the earthy tones of the pier and the characters’ clothing.
André Hardy’s textured and lively brushwork captures the movement, rhythm, and authentic atmosphere of the harbor, offering a sensitive tribute to the maritime world of Normandy.
