Eugène FLANDIN 1809-1876
Is a French painter best known for his Oriental views and history paintings.
His life was made up of journeys through the Orient, from which he brought back luminous paintings.

He studied with Horace Vernet.
In 1837, he left for Algeria with the French army.
In 1840, he travelled to Persia with archaeologist Pascal Coste.
After four years of perilous and prolific work, he produced a fine and comprehensive iconographic work of the region, for which he was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1842.
In 1844, we headed for Mesopotamia.
Our scene is a far cry from the grand representations for which the artist is renowned. It's more intimate, but with the light so characteristic of the painter.
