Vincent De Vos 1829–1874

Belgian painter, trained at the Academy of Kortrijk and pupil of Ed. Woutermaertens (1848-1852).
He specialized in animal painting, particularly scenes featuring dogs and/or monkeys.

His time in Italy, where he learned about landscape painting, had a profound influence on his work.
In his studio, he kept a menagerie of monkeys, wolves, and foxes so that he could paint them better.
While we find hunting dogs and monkeys in sumptuous interiors, de Vos is at his best when depicting street dogs.

His work enjoyed commercial success and was exhibited mainly in Belgium and France
He is one of Belgium's leading painters in this genre, alongside Noterman.
