Louis Godefroy Jadin 1805-1882

Nicknamed the "Raphaël des Toutous" and awarded a third-class medal in 1855, Imperial Vénerie painter Godefroy Jadin was one of the most renowned animal painters in France during the Second Empire.

A student of Abel de Pujol and Horace Vernet, he followed in the tradition of realist and naturalist painters who sought to capture the living presence of animals with precision and sensitivity.

His works met with great success among the bourgeoisie and aristocracy, who loved portraits of their hunting and leisure companions.

Jadin was able to strike a balance between realism of detail and a certain gentleness of expression, giving his paintings both an artistic and psychological dimension.
He also produced numerous engravings.

Throughout his career, his success has never been denied.

According to Du Camp 1855, his broad, somewhat rough, sometimes unfinished brushstrokes [were] perfectly suited to a painter of animals whose coats require a certain roughness of hand.
Beaudelaire 1859: There are here, first of all, M. Jadin's usual qualities, energy and solidity, but moreover a poetic impression perfectly well captured and rendered.

The painting presented here is an oil on panel depicting a West Highland White Terrier.
The artist has skilfully captured the silky texture of the dog's white coat, enhanced by reddish tones around the muzzle and ears. The dog's eyes, slightly darkened by the shadow, contrast with the liveliness of his black muzzle, giving him an expression both attentive and full of character.

His works can be found at the Musée D'orsay, Compiègne and many others.
