This fragment is an oil on canvas cotnrecollé on metal, dating from the 19th century, probably part of a larger ensemble, such as an altarpiece or polyptych.
Our work depicts a scene from the "Carrying of the Cross", a central theme in the Passion of Christ.
This iconography is very common in Renaissance painting, particularly among Northern European artists.
The irregularly shaped piece shows a young man dressed in a light gray tunic and green loincloth, girded with a purple rope.
He appears to be carrying a beam or piece of a cross on his shoulder, evoking a religious scene, perhaps the ascent to Calvary.
In the background, we can partially make out the face of a veiled figure, male or female ...
Today, the fragment is presented on a modern black support that allows it to be displayed.
