The unknown artist depicts the story of Joseph and his brothers.
In Genesis, Joseph is the youngest of 12 brothers, all jealous of him for being their father's favorite.
He is sold into slavery by his brothers.

Even today, Joseph's story remains rocky and mysterious.
But the episode at the well, depicted here, is well known.

The eldest, Reuben, does not want Joseph to be killed.
Instead, he will be stripped and thrown down a well.
Judah offers to sell Joseph to a caravan of Ishmaelite merchants. We see them in the background of the gouache with their camel.

But Midianite merchants passing by pulled Joseph out of the cistern. They sell him for twenty pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites, who take him to Egypt.
