Emile BRUNET 1869-1943

Coming from a modest family, his parents dreamed of a position with the gas company to secure his future.

But Emile, aged 14, wanted a more artistic future. He joined a decorating firm and then attended evening classes at the Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. He practiced academic art.

His talent catches the eye of an art dealer who finances his trip to Paris.

Brunet began his career in Gustave Moreau's studio.

Few painters of the 19th century had as much influence on their students as Gustave Moreau (1826-1898). A painter, illustrator and symbolist decorator, he was one of the greatest masters of his time.
While Emile Brunet developed different styles throughout his career, our works (especially the one in the center) bear the imprint of Gustave Moreau.

Brunet defines his early work as follows: "Form is definitive, while thought is contemplative". The artist treats form and pictorial richness as much as the primacy of thought and mystery.

At the same time, Brunet began designing interiors for private mansions and furniture.

Here, the artist depicts Sainte Geneviève, patron saint of the city of Paris.
