Henri Zuber 1844–1909

Henri Zuber was born near Mulhouse, in the Jean Zuber et Cie factory, famous for its large panoramas.
Although very talented at drawing, he chose a career in the navy at his parents' insistence and had the opportunity to take part in campaigns in the Far East, during which he constantly recorded his discoveries through drawings, watercolors, and writing.

But his passion for painting led him to abandon this path, and in 1868 he entered the studio of Charles Gleyre (1806-1874).

He settled in Paris and suffered greatly from France's defeat in 1871—while defending the capital's walls at Fort Mont Valérien—and then from the turmoil of the Paris Commune.

He devotes all his time to painting.
He paints in Paris and the Ile-de-France region and travels extensively, settling with his family for long stays in spring or fall in many regions of France, as well as in Switzerland, Holland, and England.

Throughout his career as a painter, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon des Aquarellistes, of which he was a prominent figure; his works are held in numerous museums in France and abroad.
