Georges BILLAUDOT (Paris, 1868-1951)

Before becoming a painter, he was a training officer at the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr, where he served with distinction. It was only after his marriage in 1902 that he decided to leave his military career and devote himself entirely to painting, thus fulfilling a long-suppressed vocation.

A self-taught painter, Billaudot did not follow the academic path of the Beaux-Arts. He trained himself through direct observation of nature and the assiduous practice of working "sur le motif". At first, he painted landscapes of Paris and its surroundings: the banks of the Seine, the Tuileries Gardens, the capital's vistas.

His style, rooted in post-impressionism, sometimes evokes Seurat's pointillism, but is not entirely submissive to it. He combined rigorous drawing with freedom of touch, precision of vision with colorful sensitivity. Billaudot was above all a painter of light, attentive to reflections, the vibrations of foliage and the poetry of simple places.
