This unsigned portrait,
depicts an elegantly dressed man in a dark frock coat with wide lapels. The voluminous white scarf tied high under the chin and thick sideburns with no moustache are typical of men's fashions from 1815 to 1825, at the end of the Empire and the beginning of the Restoration.

The artist used a refined drawing technique, probably graphite or black stone, enhanced by subtle nuances.
The modelling of the face is achieved by soft gradations, without overly pronounced contours, giving an impression of roundness and presence. The details of the clothing, notably the delicately pleated scarf and the velvety texture of the jacket, testify to the artist's mastery of pencil.
Precisely placed shadows give the portrait harmonious depth and a calm, composed character.

The set is in the tradition of early XIXᵉ century bourgeois portraiture, where technical finesse enhances the elegance and respectability of the sitter.
