In 1886, Louis Valtat entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris in the studio of Jules Lefebvre (1834-1911).
From 1886 to 1888, he completed his training at the Académie Julian under Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888), then his successor Benjamin-Constant (1845-1902), and befriended Pierre Bonnard.

He met Édouard Vuillard and the Nabis group, who also influenced his work.
He made his debut at the Salon des Indépendants in 1889. In 1890, he won the Prix Jauvin d'Attainville. He set up his first studio on rue de la Glacière in Paris.
He traveled to many of the French and European regions that inspired his work. He frequented and befriended some of the greatest names in the art world, including Aristide Maillol, Renoir and Vollard.
He was present at the most important salons of his time, and his works can be found in many museums.
