Our unsigned work was probably painted around 1920.
According to legend, Saint Hubert, a lord with a passion for hunting in the Ardennes in the VIIIᵉ century, was pursuing a large stag on Good Friday. Just as he was about to kill it, the animal turned around: between its antlers appeared a luminous crucifix. A divine voice called him to leave his life of unbridled hunting and devote himself to God.
Upset, Hubert converted and later became bishop of Liège and patron saint of hunters.
. In the history of art, this scene has been widely represented, especially from the Middle Ages onwards and during the Renaissance: the stag carrying the crucifix became the main attribute of Saint Hubert, visible in stained glass windows, illuminations, altarpieces and paintings. This image symbolizes the encounter between wild nature and divine revelation, and remains one of the strongest Christian iconographies linking hunting and faith.
