Joseph Bernard Artigue (1859–1936)

is a French painter whose work celebrates the light and rural life of southwestern France. Encouraged by his family to pursue his artistic talents, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse in 1873, where he befriended artists such as Henri Martin and Antoine Bourdelle.

In 1882, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens, Alexandre Cabanel, and Léon Bonnat.

Artigue regularly exhibited in Paris at the major art fairs of his time.

Before World War I, he also exhibited his works in Russia at the request of the empress

This painting depicts a young woman in prayer, kneeling before a cradle whose white sheets are barely visible in the foreground. Her head is bowed, her hands are clasped, and her eyes are downcast, conveying a sense of deep contemplation.

Nothing disturbs this moment of quiet intimacy, where motherhood blends with devotion.

The eye is immediately drawn to the large blue veil enveloping the figure.
Rendered in an infinite variety of shades (from deep cobalt to silvery blues), it becomes the true subject of the pastel.

Artigue masterfully exploits the possibilities of this technique, using layers upon layers of hatching and overlays to create a real sense of intensity
