Here, the artist takes us on a Sunday afternoon journey to the Belle Époque, offering a mischievous and almost caricature-like view of his contemporaries.
The figures are scattered with great freedom within the composition, as if captured on the spot:
In the picture, we see a man who is clearly dozing off after having had too much to drink, while his neighbor is insistently embracing his girlfriend and a third man seems to be hiding behind his newspaper, all the while watching.
The painter depicts new forms of recreation and public parks: there is a large, grinning face—an attraction where children gather around, trying to get the ball to land in its mouth.
By weaving together these humorous little skits, Royet goes beyond the simple park scene.
The modernity of the composition and the spontaneous framing give the painting the feel of a snapshot of modern life—at once tender, funny, and slightly satirical.
