LEMAÎTRE André

Born 1908-1995 in Falaise (Calvados).

Twentieth century. French.

Painter of figures, nudes, various subjects.

His frank, synthetic vision of reality and his direct, well-constructed technique place him firmly within the Ecole de Paris of the interwar period.

He had a happy early childhood with his parents, who had a hairdressing salon at the foot of the church in Guibray; an old Falais family which, he said with a smile, "could only go back to the Vikings!

In 1914, at the first cannon shot, his father, Henri, was mobilized. In 1916, he fell on the field of honor at Verdun... Young André Raymond Henri Prudent Lemaitre became a fatherless ward of the Nation.

His mother remarried, and life went on...differently... André Lemaitre was admitted to the École Normale and became a schoolmaster in Billy: a charming little village on the Caen plain.

"A paradise," he wrote, "nature in all its glory, in all its strength, in all its poetry..."

Married, with children, a life divided between family, school and, above all, painting.

In fact, he never spent a day, from his early youth until his death, without painting or drawing.

He has exhibited all over France and won several awards.
