Our painting is signed "Lé B…" in the upper right corner and dated 1881.
The painter himself opens the doors to his studio for the viewer.
In the 19th century, the studio was a true hub of life and creativity, serving as a cabinet of curiosities that reflected the intellect of the artist working there, as well as a space to showcase his work to prospective buyers.
Here we can see the painter at work. He is currently working on a portrait.
The man is surrounded by three women: the model and two others going about their business (the model’s chaperone, the artist’s family… anything is possible).
The studio is a painting in itself. Here we explore the painter’s other works, and as modern observers, we discover what life was like in that era.
