He then turned to interior scenes and depictions of Parisian life, which earned him several prestigious distinctions: honorable mention and Brizard prize in 1889, 3ᵉ classe medal in 1897, 2ᵉ classe medal in 1899, then a bronze medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
Dividing his time between Paris and Normandy, he worked in the capital during the winter, inspired by the hustle and bustle of city life, and devoted his summers to the seascapes around his home in Bénouville, near Étretat. He was also responsible for decorating the town hall in Vanves.
In recognition of his work, he was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1910.
Here, the artist depicts a peddler on a country road, in a calm and luminous atmosphere.
The sky, in soft shades of blue, pink, and white, diffuses a delicate light that envelops the entire composition and reminds us of the Impressionist style.
The work is distinguished by its poetic realism, where the simplicity of the subject is imbued with profound humanity. This painting evokes rural France of a bygone era and is part of a naturalistic, realistic, and impressionistic tradition.
