Albert Roosenboom 1845–1875

A Belgian painter and a leading figure in genre painting, portraiture, and depictions of everyday life featuring children.

He trained in the studio of Constantin Meunier, a painter and engraver of genre scenes.
But unlike his master, who focused on the world of labor, Roosenboom was drawn to subdued atmospheres, richly decorated settings, and childlike joys.

Highly regarded by the middle class for his tender and refreshing works, his paintings soon began to appear in major Belgian and international art shows, such as those in London.

Here, the artist depicts a moment frozen in time: two children holding one of the gifts, about to open a door alongside a little dog who is thrilled by this surprise.

A beautiful moment of closeness that the painter captures through gesture: the knowing glances exchanged by the two children, the girl’s hand resting on the boy’s.

The viewer becomes a discreet witness to this impending surprise. The large red curtain in front of the door reinforces the impression of a story unfolding as if on a theater stage.

The artist also puts all her technical virtuosity to work in the details: the crumpled paper wrapping the flowers, the petals in the bouquet, the lace on the skirt, the buttons on the ankle boots…

Roosenboom doesn't just portray children as mere models; he strives to capture their gestures and their bond…

Last but not least, special attention is paid to the Japanese-style backdrop—a painting within a painting.
