Louis PETIT (1864-1937),
regularly exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1898.
He received an honourable mention in 1900 at the Universal Exhibition in Paris and a silver medal in 1914.

Our painting shows part of the arch of the carrousel square of the Louvre, seen from behind. In the background, the buildings of the Louvre Museum.
This square is so called because on 5-6 June 1662, Louis XIV organised a military equestrian show there, called the Grand Carrousel, in honour of the birth of his son.
The triumphal arch was built between 1806 and 1808. It celebrates Napoleon's victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805.
Designed by the great architects Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine, it was erected in front of the Tuileries Palace, to which it served as the main entrance.
