Joseph Bail (1862-1921) came from a family of painters.
He followed the realist tradition of genre subjects with a Dutch tendency.
His brother and father were just as well known. In 1886, however, he became the youngest recipient of the Medal of Honor. In 1900, he was awarded the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle for three of his paintings.

His works are in the Dutch and Flemish style, but also in the style of Chardin. He knows how to render the brilliance of copper, play with the light of a sunbeam and loves to depict kitchen staff and maids.
