Matthijs Lode 1915–1955

Our painting is dated 1951

A Belgian painter, watercolorist, and draftsman who has developed a deeply personal body of work that straddles the boundaries of poetic realism, symbolism, and a form of free expression fueled by the imagination.

His training began at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Anderlecht, where he learned the basics of drawing and composition.

During his formative years, he also benefited from the guidance of two leading figures in 20th-century Belgian art: Jos Albert and Félix De Boeck.

Despite these formative encounters, Matthijs remains largely a self-taught artist, gradually developing an independent visual language that diverges from traditional academic trends

Her work reveals a consistent fascination with quiet atmospheres, female figures, domestic animals, nocturnal scenes, and landscapes imbued with an almost fantastical quality.
Her compositions oscillate between observations of everyday life and the inner world, giving rise to a universe steeped in poetry and mystery.

Color plays a central role in his painting. Matthijs favors deep harmonies of blues, greens, and warm earth tones, which he brings to life with luminous brushstrokes and subtle contrasts.
His drawing style, often free and concise, prioritizes atmosphere over meticulous detail.
