Georges Binet 1865-1949

Born in Le Havre in 1865, he began his training under the painter Charles Lhullier and went on to study in Paris in the renowned studios of Raphaël Collin and Fernand Cormon.

Binet soon broke away from academicism to adopt a freer style, influenced by the Impressionists he met in Normandy.

A regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1889 and 1939, he was awarded a medal in 1899 and named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1937.

Like the Impressionist painters—though he never identified as one—Binet loved to capture scenes from everyday life. His flower market paintings were regularly exhibited and earned him a gold medal at the 1912 Salon

While Georges Binet is known for his outdoor landscapes, seascapes, and bustling beaches—capturing the subtle shifts of the day’s light—the artist also enjoys painting urban scenes where the changing colors of fireworks illuminate the deep black of night, as seen in this work.

The artist deviates somewhat from his usual style.
The composition is lively, almost frenetic, with the silhouettes of the spectators—sketched in an impressionistic style—blending into the effervescence of the bright colors projected into the sky and reflected on the crowd.

The quick, colorful brushstrokes suggest the movement and brilliance of the lights, while the deep night serves as a dark backdrop, accentuating the luminous effect of the fireworks.
The work thus stands out as an exceptional foray into a style dominated by color and movement—a departure from the artist’s usual focus on the tranquil beauty of the banks of the Seine.
