Mathilde Arbey (1890–1966)

Mathilde Eugénie Louise Arbey developed an interest in the arts at a very young age; she enrolled at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and Ferdinand Humbert.

Her career officially began in 1913 when she exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français.
This first exhibition earned her an honorable mention, marking the beginning of her growing recognition within artistic circles.

After becoming a member of the Salon, she went on to win a silver medal there in 1926
and then a gold medal in 1930 for her work *Portrait of René A.*

Between 1919 and 1924, she also exhibited her paintings at the Salon d’Automne.

Very active in women's art associations, she regularly participated in exhibitions organized by the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors between 1921 and 1939. Her talent was recognized there with the Union's Decorative Arts Prize in 1925.

A few years later, she exhibited there a series of works focusing on the historic mansions and courtyards of Capri.
In 1928, her self-portrait titled *Fin de journée* was awarded the Claudio Castelucho-Diana Prize at the Salon.

The late 1920s marked a new phase in her career with her winning of the Compagnie Paquet Prize in 1929. Shortly thereafter, she undertook several trips to North Africa, spending time in Morocco and Tunisia, among other places.

This period earned him further honors, including the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte Prize in 1931, as well as several awards from the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français during the 1930s.
