This 18th-century painting (similar in style to the work of Bouzonnet STELLA) depicts a group of children playing in a natural landscape, but it is rendered with a classical inspiration characteristic of the period. The childlike figures, nude and with idealized proportions, are reminiscent of the putti or young mythological figures found in the bas-reliefs and paintings of ancient Rome.
The children’s rhythmic and dynamic gestures and postures evoke the traditional games of Greece and Rome, where the human body was celebrated through joy and movement. The background, composed of trees and hills softened by diffused light, creates a timeless space that brings the scene closer to an ancient garden or grove, often depicted as a place of freedom and carefree joy.
