Alfred Verwée 1838-1895

Is a Belgian painter, known as one of the first to paint en plein air. In Belgium, he is considered one of the precursors of the realist movement.
He co-founded the Société des Beaux-Arts.
He painted landscapes in the Barbizon style, being a great admirer of Constant Troyon.

In 1863 he won a gold medal at the Brussels Salon, then in 1864 at the Paris Salon. In 1872, he was made a knight of the Order of Leopold.

From these years on, he travels through the countryside painting in the open air.

In the 80's he started to specialize in animal paintings, especially in the region of Knokke-Heist, a seaside resort on the North Sea, on the border with the Netherlands.
