Cécilio PIZZARO 1818-1886
Spanish painter, draughtsman and engraver.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Toledo, then continued his studies in Madrid.
His talent was soon recognized, first in his native Toledo, where he won several medals at the Salon.
He also worked for newspapers and on theater sets.
l painted landscapes, still lifes and historical portraits, such as ours, dated 1842.
In the 50s, he specialized in drawing and engraving.
Prolific and talented, he was soon recognized by critics and sought after by collectors.

Pizarro's paintings recall the universality of painting. His touch is unmistakable, yet so many elements recall the great painters of past centuries.
Here, he brilliantly portrays this battle scene, with the movement of the horses throwing themselves into battle in the background.
The knight's face seems transfigured, like a Christ-like figure accepting his mission and sacrifice in advance.
