In 1899, at the age of 33, he decided to make a living from his passion, painting.

His talent soon brought him into the great circles of the art world. A member of the Société nationale des Beaux-arts and the Pastel Society in London, he was appointed official painter to the navy in 1900.

In 1890, he discovered and fell in love with the town of Concarneau, where he settled in 1903.

His house would become the home of some of Brittany's greatest painters. Legout-Gérard painted the peaceful yet lively life of Brittany's markets and ports.

Our work is dated 1899 and probably represents the port of Concarneau or its surroundings.

His brushstrokes, very often sketched in quick strokes, make the canvas vibrate. The artist often works in subtle gradations of blue and gray, enhanced by the white headdresses of the Breton women or the subtle reflections of the sun on the water.
