In 1853, at the age of 14, he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, then Brussels.
He befriended the painter Isidore Meyers, and together they went to Paris and Barbizon in 1858 to study with the great masters of the naturalist school, Camille Corot, Théodore Rousseau and François Millet.

After returning to Belgium, the artist enjoyed painting rural landscapes and country life.
He travels with a caravan, settling wherever his inspiration takes him, to paint as close to reality as possible.

His talent was recognized, and he was awarded medals and distinctions, notably at the international level in Saint-Louis in the United States in 1904 and in Argentina in 1910.

Along with Emile Claus, he was one of the founders of the Luminist art circle "Vie et Lumière" (1904) and, in 1905, of the "Art d'aujourd'hui" group.
