Coming from a family of linen merchants in Nantes, their father, who had several children, encouraged two of his sons to pursue a career in painting: Paul and Maurice.

Paul began studying at the Académie Julian at a very young age, between 1883 and 1887, under the guidance of Bougeureau and Tony Robert-Fleury

As early as 1885, he began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français and would regularly submit works there

Paul Chabas achieved success at an early age.
Awarded an honorable mention at the 1892 Salon, followed by medals in 1895 and 1896, he won the Salon’s National Prize in 1899 for *Joyeux Ébats*.
This distinction earned him a two-year travel grant, during which he traveled through Italy, Greece, Turkey, Algeria, and even Norway

A leading figure in French academic art, Paul Chabas served as director of the Institut de France from 1921 to 1937 and as president of the Société des artistes français from 1926 to 1936, following in the footsteps of his mentors William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury.

Our painting depicts a young woman captured in an intimate moment by the water.
She appears to be playing with her hair, holding it in her hands in a natural and delicate gesture.

Chabas’s color palette is characterized by soft, luminous tones: ochres, beiges, and rosy hues for the skin, contrasting with the soft green of the trees and the light blue of the sky reflected on the water.
The fluid, light brushwork accentuates the gentle atmosphere and the freshness of the scene.
