Miriam ROCHER 1875-1971
Miriam Rocher won her town's painting competition at the age of 14.
Thanks to a pension, she went to live in Paris.
Between her classes at the Académie de Dessin and those at Puvis-de-Chavannes' studio,
Miriam frequented the artistic and literary salons
where she made friends with the great painters of the day.
It was with the artist Henri Martin (1860-1943) that she developed the closest ties.

In 1911-1912, she made a major trip to Mexico and then South America, traveling through Brazil, where she painted the portrait of President Hermes da Fonseca, before spending some time in Argentina, opening a painting studio in Buenos Aires that enjoyed a solid reputation.
Between the wars, she moved to Algiers, where she became director of the Union Artistique de l'Afrique du Nord, just founded in 1925.
Miriam Rocher paints herself here in her studio
Very young at the time of this work - around 30 years of age - we can already sense in certain areas
(background and face) the technique of his friend Henri Martin.
Light, vertical, parallel brushstrokes, pressed against each other
each other, in very subtle gradations.
The way the artist chooses to paint herself is not insignificant.
She is a woman of her time.
Her hairstyle
and dress,
are a reference to Japanese geishas. At the time, European artists were fascinated by Japanese art.
Myriam Rocher also reveals her talent as a composer and colorist.
Each shot is composed of different objects, all in perfect harmony.
