Our work is an oil on paper mounted on panel.
"You have to draw a lot, it's indispensable.
This adage and obsession with drawing can be seen here in this very small work
which without the frame measures 16 x 13.2 cm.
The importance of line and the reflection of perspective can be seen in the hypnotic blue sky and the warm rays of southern France and Italy.
Henri Harpignies is a French landscape painter.
From an early age, Harpignies developed his passion for drawing by observing nature.
Going against his family's wishes to pursue a career as a merchant, he joined the studio of painter Jean Achard in 1846.
After two years of training, he decided to travel, notably to Italy.
On his return to France in 1850, he naturally joined Corot and the Barbizon School.

He then rented a studio in Paris, painted in the Fontainebleau forest and repaired in Italy.
He discovers the village of Hérisson in the Allier, returning there every summer for 10 years in the company of other landscape painters.
He then divided his time between Saint-Privé in the Yonne and the south of France.
His greatest successes were at the Paris salons from 1861 onwards, and his works appear in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
He was made Commander of the Légion d'Honneur in 1901, and Grand Officer in 1911.
