Maurice Bompard was a student of Gustave Boulanger (master of orientalism) at the Beaux-Arts de Paris.
He exhibited from 1878 and in 1882 obtained a grant to visit Spain, Italy and Tunisia.
From there, his love for Venetian seascapes, landscapes and orientalist portraits was born.
From a very academic style at the start of his career, Bompard evolves towards a more impressionistic touch where light is king.
