Gabriel PERELLE
Born in 1603 in Vernon-sur-Seine. Died on March 6, 1677, in Paris.
Painter of animated landscapes, landscapes, watercolorist, engraver, draftsman. The son of a farmer who worked for the Duke of Vieuveille, he entered the duke’s service as a valet, and the duke, noticing his talent for drawing, took him under his wing and appointed Daniel Rabel as his teacher.
After completing this training, he worked in Simon Vouet’s studio.
He also became a great engraver, working from drawings by Poussin, Asselyn, Paul Bril, and Silvestre.
“He demonstrated equal talent as a draftsman and engraver, producing a considerable number of landscapes and views. He drew inspiration for his compositions from Claude Lorrain and Francisque Millet, but he maintained a personal style that makes his prints instantly recognizable.”
