Maurice LOUTREUIL 1885-1925

Is a French painter affiliated with the Expressionist movement.

In 1911, he enrolled at the Beaux-Arts de Paris under the supervision of Gabriel Ferrier.
His strong character, which did not support classical institutions, led to his dismissal from the school.

He frequented the painters of Montmartre and became friends with Pinchus Krémègne (a Jewish painter from the Ecole de Paris) and André Masson (a painter, illustrator, engraver and viscerally anti-conformist artist), both of whom had a major influence on his painting.

Loutreuil's off-the-beaten-track talent was soon appreciated, and great painters like Antoine Bourdelle recognized his originality.

With painters and critics from Le Prés saint Gervais, a small country commune east of Paris, he formed a close-knit artistic community modeled on the Pont-Aven School.

In 1920, he founded the Salon des Anonymes.
Like the painters of his time, he traveled in Europe and Africa.

After his death in 1937, several of his works were included in the "Masters of Independent Art" exhibition at the Musée du Petit Palais during the Exposition Internationale.
In 1994, some forty of his paintings were shown in a retrospective exhibition at the Musée Bourdelle in Paris. The Mairie du IXe arrondissement showed a collection of drawings and watercolors.

A painter of a variety of subjects, here he depicts a Parisian landscape. With a photographic framing, the brushstroke and drawing are vigorous, while the color is nuanced in light tones.
Style and material combine their strengths to give a raw vision of reality.
